Deep Recurrent Survival Analysis
Survival analysis is a hotspot in statistical research for modeling
time-to-event information with data censorship handling, which has been widely
used in many applications such as clinical research, information system and
other fields with survivorship bias. Many works have been proposed for survival
analysis ranging from traditional statistic methods to machine learning models.
However, the existing methodologies either utilize counting-based statistics on
the segmented data, or have a pre-assumption on the event probability
distribution w.r.t. time. Moreover, few works consider sequential patterns
within the feature space. In this paper, we propose a Deep Recurrent Survival
Analysis model which combines deep learning for conditional probability
prediction at fine-grained level of the data, and survival analysis for
tackling the censorship. By capturing the time dependency through modeling the
conditional probability of the event for each sample, our method predicts the
likelihood of the true event occurrence and estimates the survival rate over
time, i.e., the probability of the non-occurrence of the event, for the
censored data. Meanwhile, without assuming any specific form of the event
probability distribution, our model shows great advantages over the previous
works on fitting various sophisticated data distributions. In the experiments
on the three real-world tasks from different fields, our model significantly
outperforms the state-of-the-art solutions under various metrics.Comment: AAAI 2019. Supplemental material, slides, code:

Estradiol regulates miR-135b and mismatch repair gene expressions via estrogen receptor-β in colorectal cells.
Estrogen has anti-colorectal cancer effects which are thought to be mediated by mismatch repair gene (MMR) activity. Estrogen receptor (ER) expression is associated with microRNA (miRNA) expression in ER-positive tumors. However, studies of direct link between estrogen (especially estradiol E2), miRNA expression, and MMR in colorectal cancer (CRC) have not been done. In this study, we first evaluated the effects of estradiol (E2) and its antagonist ICI182,780 on the expression of miRNAs (miR-31, miR-155 and miR-135b) using COLO205, SW480 and MCF-7 cell lines, followed by examining the association of tissue miRNA expression and serum E2 levels using samples collected from 18 colorectal cancer patients. E2 inhibited the expressions of miRNAs in COLO205 cells, which could be reversed by E2 antagonist ICI 182.780. The expression of miR-135b was inversely correlated with serum E2 level and ER-β mRNA expression in CRC patients' cancer tissues. There were significant correlations between serum E2 level and expression of ER-β, miR-135b, and MMR in colon cancer tissue. This study suggests that the effects of estrogen on MMR function may be related to regulating miRNA expression via ER-β, which may be the basis for the anti-cancer effect in colorectal cells
Computational Design of Flexible Electride with Nontrivial Band Topology
Electrides, with their excess electrons distributed in crystal cavities playing the role of anions, exhibit a variety of unique electronic and magnetic properties. In this work, we employ the first-principles crystal structure prediction to identify a new prototype of A3B electride in which both interlayer spacings and intralayer vacancies provide channels to accommodate the excess electrons in the crystal. This A3B type of structure is calculated to be thermodynamically stable for two alkaline metals oxides (Rb3O and K3O). Remarkably, the unique feature of multiple types of cavities makes the spatial arrangement of anionic electrons highly flexible via elastic strain engineering and chemical substitution, in contrast to the previously reported electrides characterized by a single topology of interstitial electrons. More importantly, our first-principles calculations reveal that Rb3O is a topological Dirac nodal line semimetal, which is induced by the band inversion at the general electronic k momentums in the Brillouin zone associated with the intersitial electric charges. The discovery of flexible electride in combining with topological electronic properties opens an avenue for electride design and shows great promises in electronic device applications

Klotho controls the brain-immune system interface in the choroid plexus.
Located within the brain's ventricles, the choroid plexus produces cerebrospinal fluid and forms an important barrier between the central nervous system and the blood. For unknown reasons, the choroid plexus produces high levels of the protein klotho. Here, we show that these levels naturally decline with aging. Depleting klotho selectively from the choroid plexus via targeted viral vector-induced knockout in Klotho flox/flox mice increased the expression of multiple proinflammatory factors and triggered macrophage infiltration of this structure in young mice, simulating changes in unmanipulated old mice. Wild-type mice infected with the same Cre recombinase-expressing virus did not show such alterations. Experimental depletion of klotho from the choroid plexus enhanced microglial activation in the hippocampus after peripheral injection of mice with lipopolysaccharide. In primary cultures, klotho suppressed thioredoxin-interacting protein-dependent activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in macrophages by enhancing fibroblast growth factor 23 signaling. We conclude that klotho functions as a gatekeeper at the interface between the brain and immune system in the choroid plexus. Klotho depletion in aging or disease may weaken this barrier and promote immune-mediated neuropathogenesis
Clinical observation on the treatment of glaucoma with cataract through triple surgery
AIM: To observe the therapeutic effect of triple surgery in the treatment of glaucoma with cataract at different stages.<p>METHODS: Totally 31 patients(55 eyes)with glaucoma and cataract were treated with phacoemulsification, lens implantation and trabeculectomy. Preoperation and postoperation of visual acuity, intraocular pressure, filtering bleb and postoperation complications were observed.<p>RESULTS: After 6mo postoperation, the vision was significantly improved. The intraocular pressure was controlled in normal range and filtering bleb was good. There was a little complications after operation.<p>CONCLUSION: Phacoemulsification intraocular lens implantation with anti-glaucoma establishes new aqueous humor outflow. It can effectively decrease intraocular pressure, deepen anterior chamber and improve vision, reduce all kinds of complications after simple glaucoma surgery
